01 May Carbs…why we should still be friends!

There are tons of different diets out there that can certainly cause some confusion about what is good and bad for our bodies. It makes sense that the general population would be confused as to whether or not carbs are good for them. However, carbs are very necessary for our bodies! Here are 4 important reasons why:

Carbs are our bodies main source of energy —  Carbs are converted to glucose for every cell in our body to use for energy. In fact, glucose is our brain’s main fuel source. If you do not consume enough carbohydrates, fats and protein in the body will be broken down for energy instead, which can lead to muscular atrophy and loss of necessary fat.

Carbohydrates help with muscle recovery after a workout — Remaining glucose is stored as glycogen as part of our “energy reserves”. When you exercise, these stores get used up, so it is important to replenish them to prevent atrophy of your muscles which could lead to injury.

Carbs feed the good bacteria in our gut — The microbiome in our small intestines is one of the most vital components of our immune and digestive systems. Carbs actually feed these good bacteria. This is important for our ability to digest food, absorb nutrients, and to maintain a strong immune response.

Fiber! — Carbs provide fiber which is important for overall digestive health, satiety, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
